Fight Cavities Naturally & Never Get Another One

Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in humans, estimated to affect 95% of adults at some point in their life.

(As a comparison, asthma, which also is considered very common, only affects 7% of Americans.) In children from age 5 to 17, this disease is also more widespread than bronchitis and hay fever. The person without them is a cause for comment. But the condition of dental caries is not a normal condition and is entirely preventable; not with good oral hygiene, as we have been taught, but with good nutrition. While good oral health and hygiene is certainly a part of preventing cavities, and is vital for social reasons, brushing and flossing pales in importance to good nutrition in the fight against dental caries.

10 Ways to Heal and Prevent Cavities

GREEN TEA contains polyphenols, antioxidant plant compounds that prevent plaque from adhering to your teeth and help reduce your chances of developing cavities and gum disease. Tea also has potential for reducing bad breath because it inhibits the growth of the bacteria that cause the odor. Many green teas also contain fluoride which helps protect tooth enamel from decay and promotes healthy teeth. That may explain those reports that show a reduction in cavities among grade school children who drank green tea after lunch.

XYLITOL dramatically reduces new cavities—it helps to reverse the process of decay in already active cavities, according to a U-M study of more than 1,200 children. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that is produced by reduction of the sugar xylose, or wood sugar. Xylitol occurs naturally in fruits and berries, such as pears and strawberries. Xylitol toothpaste and gum can be found in health food stores. Xylitol is highly processed and not to be used in excess or as your only method of restoration of teeth.

DITCH TOOTHPASTES WITH GLYCERIN Glycerin in all toothpastes is so sticky that it takes 27 washes to get it off. Teeth brushed with any toothpaste containing glycerin are coated with a film and cannot properly remineralize. Skeptical? Try this simple test. Start with a clean sink and smear some of your toothpaste on the sink. Rinse it off and watch how the water beads up because of the sticky glycerin. You will have to keep rinsing and rinsing to remove it! Your teeth are similar to a porcelain sink, and your teeth are being coated every time you use toothpaste. Coated teeth cannot re-enamelize from nutrients in the diet.

Buy a toothpaste which is free of glycerine. Eco dent is a glycerine-free toothpowder. Also, many use tooth soap or a cheaper alternative is a diluted Dr. Bronners.

VITAMIN D
A new report highlights the fact that vitamin D, otherwise known as the sunshine vitamin, is just as essential in the fight against cavities as calcium. The fact is most people are very deficient in Vitamin D. About half of the population.

In a report released by the Orthomolecular Medical Society, they say, "There is especially strong evidence for a relationship between vitamin D deficiency and cavities. Dozens of studies were conducted in the 1930's and 1940's. More than 90% of the studies concluded that supplementing children with vitamin D prevents cavities." VITAMIN K2 essential for bone growth and mineral absorption vitamin K helps to prevent tooth decay by interfering with acid-forming enzymes on the teeth.  Vitamin K also enhances the production of a protein named ostoecalcin that helps to draw calcium into the teeth. In a clinical study conducted in the 1940s, people who received vitamin K-containing chewing gum after each meal was found to reduce the amount of new tooth decay by 60% - 90% after six to nine months. Foods high in Vitamin K2 are egg yolks, hard cheese, and natto.

REDUCE PHYTIC ACID IN YOUR DIET Phytic acid binds with important minerals, such as calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc in the intestinal tract, blocking their absorption. This can cause deficiencies in vital nutrients needed for your teeth and consequently causing cavities. It is important to prepare foods in a way to reduce phytic acid content. LICORICE ROOT compounds isolated from licorice root may help prevent cavities, according to researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles. The scientists showed that an extract from a plant root contains at least two compounds that appear to be potent inhibitors of Streptococcus mutans, a major cause of dental caries.

CHLORELLA GROWTH FACTOR (CGF) A six-year study conducted with Japanese children who took one capsule of "chlorella growth factor" daily showed that these children developed no tooth decay while  developing near-perfect maxillary arches (no overbite, dental misalignment etc.).
It seems likely that whole Chlorella helps adult teeth as well.

CALCIUM with adequate levels of minerals in the saliva, cavities are less likely to occur. Calcium is one of the most important mineral for protecting the teeth. A person who is on an extremely low-calcium diet would not get any remineralization, and cavities may form. I like a whole food calcium supplement best. Here is one.

BEE PROPOLIS A preliminary controlled study found that propolis mouthwash following oral surgery significantly speeded healing time as compared to placebo. Propolis extracts may also have value in treatment of severe periodontal disease, according to a study that evaluated the use of propolis extracts as part of an irrigation procedure performed twice weekly by dentists. In one study, rats given propolis in their drinking water developed fewer cavities than rats given regular water. However, no human studies have been performed to see if we would also benefit.

CRANBERRIES the berry contains a chemical that blocks cavity-causing bacteria from sticking to teeth, scientists report in Caries Research. "Something in the cranberry disarms the pathogens that cause tooth decay," researcher Hyun (Michel) Koo, DDS, PhD, says in a news release.
